World Antibiotic Awareness Week
This year World Antibiotic Awareness Week is 18th – 24th November 2019, with European Antibiotic Awareness Day on the 18th November. These global & Europe-wide public health initiatives encourage appropriate and responsible use of antibiotics.
In Wales this year, Public Health Wales have collaborated with Public Health England to share and develop their "Keep Antibiotics Working" Campaign for use in Wales. Community pharmacies have been the focus of this year’s campaign and they should all by now have received campaign materials to support and promote the following key messages:
Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them puts you and your family at risk of antibiotic resistance
Antibiotics don’t work for colds and flu. Ask your pharmacist to recommend medicines to help with symptoms and pain.
Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed for you. Never save them for later, never share them with others.
Take any unused antibiotics to your community pharmacy, who can dispose of them safely for you
Always take your doctor or pharmacist’s advice on antibiotics.
